Victory in Jesus!
Luke 2:8-14 (King
James Version)
What is the point of
celebrating Christmas?
Be honest with yourselves...
Do we say in words
that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ; while in deeds we
shop feverishly to get the perfect gift for a friend or loved one.
Let me share with you a story
from my own experience that should help us all to understand what
Christmas really means.
Saturday, December 20, 2008
The day started much like any other winter day in Western
NY; a fresh fallen snow clung to the trees and the morning
sun glistened on the branches.
I met my
friend Mark at his house so we could travel together to his
mother, Dolores', house to help her clear out the snow from
the last two days with 2 snow-blowers and share a nice visit
with her.
The card
my wife & I made was tucked safely in the truck and we
enjoyed the picturesque scenery as we drove the 1/2 hour to
get there.
We
developed a plan for snow removal and even chuckled about
who got the better end of things as we pulled up in front of
her house and saw the amount of snow to be removed.
I always enjoyed visiting with Dolores and helping her was
never a chore because she was like another mom to Cathy & I.
I'm not sure who adopted whom but from the first day we met
her and her late husband Bernie ~ we were made to feel a
part of the family.
Mark and I unloaded his snow-blower from the trailer and cut
a path to the front door so he could let her know we were
there and give her our card.
As Mark waited at the door I continued to make several
passes with the snow-blower and thought it odd that he was
still standing there after I cleared better than half of the
driveway.
When I asked Mark what was happening; he expressed his
concern as to why she hadn't answered the door after ringing
the bell several times. I shut the machine off and we
proceeded to walk around the house (locked tighter than
"Fort Knox") knocking at each window and entry way.
It didn't take long for Mark's concerns to become my
concerns fearing that Dolores had fallen. And as much as
neither one of us wanted to harm the house or take the
scolding that might follow such a bold act - we knew that
something was wrong and that we had to gain access.
We chose to go through the rear entry which literally meant
breaking in through three doors to get into the main part of
the house. And, after making all that noise we were even
more afraid for her well being because she hadn't called out
to us our responded.
To replay the incidents that followed is still too difficult
for me. We found Dolores unresponsive on her bathroom floor.
Despite our best efforts, and those of two local fire
companies and a flight car crew of paramedics, we could not
resuscitate her.
Dolores, Mark's mom (and mother to his sister Barb and
brother Cliff), was gone to be with the Lord and reunited
with her husband Bernie.
A trooper I knew as a former police officer from the town I
lived in came to assist us and after a while, Mark's
wife Robin, and my wife Cathy along with Danielle (our son's
fiancée) and Mark's sister Barb arrived.
It was very painful.
The woman we all loved and respected so much was no longer
with us.
One moment it is a sunny winter day filled with laughter and
anticipation ~ the next moment a tragedy that none of us
could have never seen coming had forever changed the
landscape of the future for a family, for loved ones and so
many other people.
The card, and the intended blessing it contained, laid
slightly wrinkled on the dining room table. I picked it up,
put it in my pocket, and prayed that I could be strong for
my dearest friends and loved ones and Mark's brother Cliff
who lived too great a distance to be there ~ in the midst of
this horrible situation.
Such a sad story ~ what does
it mean?
I'm glad you asked... Lord
knows I could go on for hours telling you about our experiences with
this family. BUT, you're right, I need to get to the point.
The point is this:
While this story may seem too
sad to have anything to do with a typical Christmas story; just
the opposite is true.
You see, Dolores and her
husband Bernie were both
Born Again Christians.
See
John 3:1-21
if you have any confusion or questions about being born again.
And because they had confessed their sins and invited Jesus Christ to be
their Lord and Savior ~ they had entered the place that was prepared for
them as the adopted daughter and son of Almighty God. They had entered
the Kingdom of Heaven.
I knew it, and everyone in the room knew it. Even in our grief we knew
beyond all worldly wisdom - that Dolores was reunited with her husband
Bernie in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Knowing this takes
the fear of the unknown out of the hands of the enemy and places the
victory in Jesus.
Charles M. Schultz,
famed creator & author of the Peanuts cartoons and comics we grew up with also
knew this to be true. And when Charlie Brown became frustrated trying to
discern the true meaning of Christmas - Linus responded in this way...
8And
there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the
field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And,
lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10And
the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For
unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord.
12And
this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13And
suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14Glory
to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward
men.
That is why we celebrate
Christmas!
It is the birthday of the
world's Messiah, Jesus Christ!
And if you accept Him into
your heart today, you too can have victory over death... Victory in
Jesus!
Victory in
Jesus
Hymn Author:
Eugene Bartlett Year Written: 1939
I heard an old, old story, How a Savior came from glory, How He gave His life on Calvary To save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, Of His precious blood's atoning, Then I repented of my sins And won the victory.
Chorus O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about His healing, Of His cleansing pow'r revealing. How He made the lame to walk again And caused the blind to see; And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit," And somehow Jesus came and bro't To me the victory.
Chorus O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory. And I heard about the streets of gold Beyond the crystal sea; About the angels singing, And the old redemption story, And some sweet day I'll sing up there The song of victory.
Chorus O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.
