WHY:
To celebrate our connection to the earth
in meaningful, healthy, and creative ways. All is from the earth with a
labor of love.
Many of us long to experience our connection to the
land in meaningful, healthy, and creative ways. From the Earth,
to be held in the Alfred area on Saturday, July 11th from
11:00 am until 6:00 pm, will celebrate our collaboration with the
natural world with a variety of attractions including flower and
vegetable gardens, tours of an organic dairy farm, creations from clay
and wood, a perennial plant sale, a guided bird walk, garden talks, and
even a stroll through the woods.
Five neighbors located in the rolling hills 2 miles
from the center of Alfred are offering what they have produced from the
earth with a labor of love. At the MacCrea family Locustbrae Farm on
Waterwells Road, Debbie MacCrea will offer perennial flowers, and
Alec MacCrea’s charming woodcarving studio and gallery of
Celtic-inspired designs will be open. Sean Hyland, a fine
furniture maker who uses primarily local wood, will also have a display.
On Randolph Road, Linda Huey will be
displaying her leafy pottery designs in a sugar shed at the end of a
path through her vegetable garden. A short woodland path leads to the
abundant flower gardens of her neighbor, Chester Galle. Find
Wendy Webb there also with an activity for children making hollyhock
dolls from 11:00 to noon. Down the hill is Sunny Cove Farm, a small
organic dairy farm run by the Snyder family. They offer all
certified organic products including exceptional quality raw milk and
beef. One hour tours of the farm will be begin at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm,
and 4:00 pm ($5). On McAndrews Road, Mary Lu Wells will
share her flower and woodland gardens with a talk at 3:00 pm. On Lake
Road at Foster Lake, Betsy Brooks will lead an informative bird
walk at 5:00 pm. [Foster Lake will not be open until then.]
Maps available at each location. For more
information, contact Linda Huey at 607-587-9877, or go to

October
The Wellsville campus of Alfred State College will, once again, host its
annual Taste of Wellsville on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009. This year it will
run from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. (a new time.)
Oct. 10 – 4th Annual Taste of Wellsville
On Saturday, Oct. 10 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Alfred State College,
School of Applied Technology will host its 4th Annual Taste of
Wellsville on its 2530 S Brooklyn Ave campus in Wellsville, NY.
Visit the Wellsville campus on Saturday, Oct. 10 to sample a “Taste of
Wellsville,” where local food establishments – Better Days, Giant Food,
L’Italia, Papa Louie’s Concessions, Tops Markets, and Truly Scrumptious
(just to name a few) will showcase their tasty signature dishes at
stations around campus. Tickets for food items are 50 cents each and are
available the day of the event. Ten percent of the proceeds will be
donated to a local charity/organization (last year’s donation went to
the Friends of Allegany County Arc.)
Interactive demonstrations by the School’s very own students will take
place in labs across campus, including activities such as Excavator
Bowling, Egg Scramble, Backhoe Softball, Tire Rolling, and much more!
The “Wild Hog” motorcycle competition will also take place. Faculty,
staff, and students enter their motorcycles, visitors to the Taste will
vote for their favorite, and a “People’s Choice” trophy will be awarded
at the end of the event.
We are hoping that the ACCORD Corp. will, again, be performing car
safety seat testing for anyone wishing to have a certified car seat
technician check a parent’s car seat to make sure 1) it fits his/her
child properly, 2) there is no recall on the seat, 3) it isn’t too old
to be used, and 4) it is properly installed in the parent’s vehicle.
Walk-ins are always welcomed; however, appointments for this testing are
appreciated. (Appointments may be made in advance by calling Allison
Mosher at (585) 593-0792 ext. 1217.)
Come on out for a great day of food, fun, and even a little “green”
education. This is a great event for all ages.
