Six members of the Alfred University Football Team
scored big last Saturday, April 19th, and
they ‘cleaned up’ in this off-season challenge.
Dave and Cathy Williams contacted AU Football Coach
Dave Murray in response to an ad in The Alfred Sun
last week offering free yard clean-up assistance
courtesy of AU Football Team Members. Coach Murray
said a group of team members would arrive at their
home on Waterwells Road in Alfred Station around
9:30 am – and show up they did! Eager to get started
these fine young men went about the tasks of raking
yard debris & stones from the Williams’ yard and
taking it to the edge of the property, one
wheelbarrow load at time, to a compost pile in the
back yard. In addition, team members helped the
Williams’ store their snow blower, set up their gas
grill and fill a couple of small holes in the yard
to prevent injuries.
“We’re so thrilled to have the help of these
gentlemen. Especially considering the lifting
restrictions Dave is following per his doctor’s
instructions following injuries to his knees & hips
in January of 2007.” said Cathy.
Dave went on to
say, “This was a great blessing to both of us ~
these men finished, in two and a half hours, what
would have taken Cathy & I over a full day to
complete.” adding, “We were so impressed by their
eagerness to give back to the community and we very
much enjoyed hearing where they were from, about
their activities and plans for their futures. These
gentlemen were so polite and so happy to help. They
are a credit not only to the team and college they
represented, but to community minded college
students everywhere.
“All too often we hear about or read about that
smaller segment of college students who have made
mistakes in our community which can often have an
unfortunate and somewhat negative impact on the
community’s perception of the general student
population at both our campuses. I can’t speak
highly enough about these young men and it is
important to me that we sing their praises in
public.”
The Williams’ had a large cooler of fresh iced tea
on hand for their helpers and served them a well
deserved, and much appreciated, lunch of grilled hot
dogs and assorted snacks when they were finished.
Cathy noted, “It’s like having the boys (the
Williams’ two sons who have grown & left the nest)
home again with their friends joining us for fun and
food in the back yard. This is wonderful.” The
Williams’ wish nothing but the very best for these
men as the complete their studies and enter the
workforce in their chosen fields.
